Not like turning on the 3D is going to affect much. It was already proven that the 3D on the 3DS is not harmful to your vision. It's a depth perception form of 3D that doesn't really alter your vision in any way.

 

Oh....well then what IS the point of this? I've only had one hinge break on my original DS, and that's because a girl dropped it on the bus (still worked fine).

The intention was to offer a more child friendly version of the 3DS for a cheaper cost. But when you pick apart as it's laid out, it completely loses it's purpose as there's nothing really wrong with the 3DS's original design for child use. They're just using it to help keep the 3DS market and it's games alive. The price isn't really all that cheaper though. It's like $40 cheaper, but doesn't come bundled with a game or anything, iirc.
